History of the boat:

The Coast Guard cutter Tv 253 was built for the Swedish Customs Coast Guard, as part of a early series of four boats, by the Djupviks Varv. The design was drawn by Erik Elfman. Tv 253 was delivered in 1960 to the outpost at Karlshamn, and was stationed there during her entire service life. The boat was decommissioned in early 1988.The service tasks included sea surveillance, customs patrol, fishery protection, oil pollution monitoring, Search and Rescue, merchant traffic regulation. The boat is constructed in aluminium, with a V-shaped hull, an enclosed pilothouse and a open flybridge.

At delivery the boats was equipped with two large petrol engines for all-out speeds, and a diesel for economy drive. Hence the earlier designation Customs Racer.
This arrangement soon proved to be to complicated and financially precarious, besides the fire hazard which was to be great. The machinery was altered to today's appearance, with on the TV 253 consists of two diesels each rated for 230 hp. The top speed at delivery was 22 knots. Today it is more like 15 knots.
TV 253 is equipped, besides a inflatable rescue raft, with a small dingy. In her present appearance the Tv 253 is also fitted out with navigational radar and the required communications equipment.

On the 22 of April 1988 the Tv 253 was transferred to the customs authority in Gothenburg with the intention to become a part of the customs museum in Gothenburg. During the time between April 1988 to June 1990 the head of the coast guards technical section provided supervision and care for the boat.
On the 26 July 1990, after consultation with the customs authority, the association "Sällskapet tullbåten Tv 253" was formed with the purpose of preserving the boat for the future. The association has through an agreement assumed the responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the boat. Based on this agreement the association has the right of use of the boat.
The association was responsible for the boats manning and charter.
